Jewellery Boxes.

Jewellery boxes in ash, pear, walnut, elm and cherry. The dimensions are 260mm wide, 180mm deep, 96mm high. There are two trays 20mm deep with a 20mm gap below the bottom tray. They are rebated to slot onto each other, the bottom tray sits on pieces glued to the box sides. There is a gap either side of the trays so that air can easily escape when the trays are placed in the box. As with all my boxes the carcases are jointed using hand-cut dovetails and have my signature logo carved on the inner backs. All the edges are rounded off to give a nice "tactile" feel.

The lids have a gentle curve on the front edge to act as a finger catch and are of frame and solid panel construction with quality brusso hinges that stop the lid opening more than 95 degrees. I prefer these hinges because they negate the need for a chain.

The trays are made using walnut splines which are fixed in grooves cut into the mitres after the tray is constructed. This is a very strong alternative to dovetailing which will insure the trays stand the test of time along with the box. All the trays are made in north American maple.

The pear and ash boxes are finished using shellac sanding sealer and wax, the others have had a number of coats of oil and finally coats of wax leaving a low sheen. All will benefit from occasional coats of beeswax over the coming years. For an insight into how these boxes were made click here.
